Offset

  • Origin

What it does

Enter your stock and tenon sizes and get two SVGs that Shaper Origin reads directly: a tenon file (stock clamped upright in the Workstation) and a mortise file (stock flat). Both come from the same numbers, so they can never drift apart.

Basic workflow

  1. ① Bit & origin: enter the bit diameter you measured with calipers (or tap a quick button and correct it). Pick which corner of the stock is the origin — set Origin's origin on that corner of the real stock.
  2. ② Tenon piece: stock width and thickness, each tenon's width and thickness, and tenon length.
  3. ③ Mortise piece: board length, width, thickness and where the mortise center is.
  4. Check the messages: red ✖ can't be cut (download explains why), yellow ⚠ can be cut but pay attention.
  5. Download the tenon and mortise SVGs, send them to Origin and check them on screen before cutting.

Top-right switches

  • mm / inch: changes display and input only. Inches accept fractions like 1 3/4 or 7/8. Downloaded SVGs are always in mm; Shaper converts automatically.
EN: switches the interface, messages, setup sheet and file names.

Tenons (②)

  • Count: number across the width × number across the thickness, max 4 in total. Spacing must be larger than the bit or the bit can't get between tenons — this is blocked.
  • The pocket frame is automatically expanded by one bit radius past the stock so no corner is left uncut. The solid blue line is the original stock frame, for alignment.
  • Tenon corner radius = bit radius; cut the mortise with the same bit and they match.
  • Leg length is only for the cut list; 0 leaves it blank.

Splayed & compound legs

  • Enter the splay angles for width and thickness (positive = foot flares toward the right / top of the frame). One angle = single splay, both = compound.
  • Tenons stay perpendicular to the seat and are centered on the shoulder level. Side view: solid = leg top, dashed = shoulder level one tenon length down.
  • You get the miter + bevel for cutting the leg top and bottom (same setting both ends, faces end up parallel).
  • An extra ⑤ splayed-leg jig SVG: angle plates for single splay, fence plate + cleat + wedges for compound, all located on the Workstation clamping-face pins. Measure the plywood thickness with calipers.

Mortise layout (③)

  • Linear: positions are measured from the origin corner; "repeat count + pitch" repeats toward the far end; tick X / Y mirror to mirror to the other side (both = four legs).
  • Leg to edge = from the leg outline to the stock edge on the origin side. Measure just that; the mortise center is worked out for you (shown on the mortise card).
  • Polar: center (board center by default), radius, count, start angle (0° = along the length, counter-clockwise positive); holes can follow the circle, point to the center, or not rotate.
  • The green dimension in the preview is the clear distance between legs (linear = the mirrored pair, polar = opposite legs); the card also lists center-to-center — use it for stretcher length. For splayed legs this is at the seat; it grows lower down.
  • “+ Create stretcher joint” next to the clear distance adds a “stretcher-leg” joint: stretcher length = clear distance + both tenons, mortise in the leg, placed at half the leg length. Change the tenon length and the stretcher length follows (untick “Stretcher: length = clear distance + both tenons” to type the length yourself). Adjust the stretcher size and height yourself.
  • Outline: rectangle (optional corner radius) or round. Tick "Cut" to cut the outline too (to thickness minus "outline skin" under Advanced, 0.1 mm by default so it doesn't cut through); unticked it's a dashed blue guide.
  • Through tenon: the mortise goes through and tenon length = stock thickness + protrusion automatically; if the stock is thicker than the flute length it is cut half from each side and you get a "back" SVG.

Dialing in the offset

Tenon offset is always 0 — adjust only the mortise. Start at −0.003″ (−0.08 mm) and go a little more negative if it's tight (about 0.002″ at a time); multiple tenons bind, so start at −0.008″ (−0.20 mm).
  • Fastest: download the “test strip SVG”. One offcut of the same species and thickness gets 4 mortise sets side by side, each already enlarged by a different offset (1–4 small dots tell them apart); cut it with Origin's offset at 0. Try your real tenon in each — click the matching button in ④ and it's saved to the log. One cut instead of several rounds.
  • A good fit: goes in, pushes home by hand, doesn't fall out when lifted.
  • Click "+ Save this combo to the log" and enter the offset. The same species + joint type (glued / knock-down) + bit will pick it up automatically.
  • Keep the good test tenon as a gauge and try it in every mortise of the batch.

Check on the Origin screen before cutting

  • Grey areas show as Pocket; in the tenon file the tenon in the middle is NOT marked for removal.
  • Blue lines are guides only — not selectable, not cut.
  • Each pocket shows the same depth as the setup sheet; the stock frame equals the real stock size.
  • Bit size set on Origin = the bit actually installed.
  • For tenons, lower the clamping face so the whole tenon sits above it (the setup sheet says how far).

Joints, cut list, setup sheet

  • A piece of furniture with several joints (leg-seat, stretcher-leg…): use "+ New / Duplicate" for each; the name is also the download file prefix.
  • The project cut list adds up all joints. Net size is L × W × T; rough length = net + angle-cut waste + extra. Part names come from the joint name (“stretcher-leg” = stretcher into leg); parts with the same name count as one piece, and you're warned if their sizes differ.
  • Print setup sheet: order, stock setup, depth and offset for every joint, plus a file checklist.
  • Your numbers are saved in this browser. To move to another computer use "Export project", then "Import project" there.

Notes

  • BenchPilot work area: about 460 × 445 mm bench-mounted, about 460 × 280 mm with the Workstation — exceeding it only shows a hint.
  • Origin max cut depth is 43 mm; you'll be warned when a cut exceeds the flute length.
  • Always test the files on scrap before cutting your real stock.
